About the course

This course is the 'rest of the story'. For close to 30 years, I have had a unique lens into the journey of student to practitioner. Most excel at treatments, understand point combinations and can easily move from intake to diagnosis to treatment...but there is still something missing. This is where Beyond the Needle: Developing Mindset and Removing Distractions for Confident Patient Care comes in. Every individual's journey to study Chinese medicine holds a captivating narrative that reshaped their lives. Acupuncturists emerge from diverse backgrounds, bringing wonderful skills to the table, but may be lacking the type of interpersonal skills in patient care specific to this field. Focusing on essential communication skills and boundary-setting, this course empowers you to communicate effectively, manage responsibilities, and deepen your practice with authenticity, presence, and curiosity.

Valerie Smith

As an acupuncturist and Chinese medicine educator, I am continually led by my curiosity and intuition. Though I have been in practice for almost 30 years, I am still in awe of the power of the body to heal, and the interconnectedness of the mind, body and spirit.  In my role as a Chinese medicine educator and clinical supervisor, I am fascinated by the unique ways individuals absorb and process knowledge. Leveraging this insight, I mentor students on how to improve communication and effect change in clinical and didactic settings. Valerie Smith, Lic.Ac. has been practicing in the Boston area since her acupuncture licensure in 1997. She was granted her master’s degree in acupuncture from the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) and holds a diplomate of acupuncture with the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
